Huddersfield Narrow Canal Pylon

The only electricity pylon under whose legs you can go by boat

Category Electrical Oddities

The Huddersfield Narrow Canal Pylon, or as it is technically known 4ZO251B, is perhaps world’s only electricity pylon under whose legs you can travel by boat.

The pylon is part of 400 kV powerline Stalybridge–Thorpe Marsh circuit and of a 275 kV transformer circuit. Stalybridge substation, which was once part of a power station, is situated close to Huddersfield Narrow Channel. The substation was built while the canal was closed to navigation, and when the canal reopened, the channel was diverted to pass between the pylon's legs
