Sheila and Doug Carrick have lived on beautiful Hornby Island since the late 1980s. Both retirees, Doug Carrick began taking an interest in the many eagles on the small island, keeping detailed records of the 18 eagle nests.
Particularly intriguing were the neighbors in a Douglas fir just 500 feet from the Carrick home. In 2004, the Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection (now the Ministry of Environment) gave Doug permission to install a closed-circuit video camera above this nest for scientific and educational purposes.
The Hornby nest was broadcast to the world in 2006, making Internet history: Millions of viewers watched in wonder as this beautiful pair incubated its two eggs. While those eggs proved not to be viable, "Mom and Dad Hornby" have fledged three healthy and magnificent chicks in the years since.

My mum and her husband have a water front place on Hornby with 2 eagle nests nearby. The eagle pairs have amazing air battles over the disputed territory that is above the house. Amazing creatures we always let them have our leftover salmon and once they took a whole baked chicken right off the picnic table when we left it unattended. We ate vegetarian that night!!
