There is a scenic lookout and informational plaque jutting out over the open-air asbestos pit mine near Thetford-Mines on Highway 112 in Quebec. Surrounded by piles of its own mined rock and gravel, the pit is impressively deep, dwarfing the neighboring villages.

The open-pit mine operates only during the summer, from May to November, when you can take a bus tour of the mine. The tour promises to enter the working mine and visit the plant, where asbestos fibres are packed. While no doubt fascinating, the wisdom of touring an active asbestos mine may be questionable.
