Skate 56 in The Belfry
Newcastle, Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland's church-turned-skate park.
Nestled at the foot of the Mourne Mountains in Newcastle is a quaint chapel that is home to the first purpose built indoor skate park in Northern Ireland. After a number of sectarian attacks on local churches, the community of Newcastle suggested that many of the town’s problems were due to the lack of a community center. The Belfry was established in April 2006.
The young people of Newcastle rallied together and suggested a skate park be the main purpose of The Belfry. Skate 56 was designed and built by Ireland’s top skateboarder, Mike Keane, with his business partner, Phil Sheridan. The space is used for the instruction of skating techniques, band practice, and other community events.
Sadly, this has since closed it doors.
