Somerset House
A place to immerge yourself with Art, Culture and Creativity.
Category Outsider Architecture
Excellent place to discover when visiting London.
In fact, a real surprise, because once you are reaching the building either from the Thames side or from the Strand you are intrigued by the beauty and the secret of the walls.
When stepping into the courtyard, you will feel transported miles away.
During the Summer, there are water jets coming directly from the cobbles. In July and August various activities are taking place; such as open air concerts (classical music as well as rock, hip-hop...etc).
When December is here, the water is gone to leave the space to an ice rink attracting a lot of fans who have been waiting for it for 11 months. And imagine the reaction of the tourists. A real contrast, between the traditional architecture and the outdoor activity with lights and music.
Important venue too, for weddings and London Fashion Week - usually in February and September for the latter.
The Strand is easy to find because only 10 minutes walk East of Trafalgar Square, The Savoy Hotel and Coutts & Co private bank (also known as the Queen's bank) which are situated along the straight road with theatres too. And of course the unique shape of Charing Cross train station.
But, Somerset House is more than just a great building. There are arts, desing & furniture exhibitions. And the back terrace is waiting for you to take an al fresco meal...or just a tea or coffee.

They usually build an outdoor ice rink in the courtyard of Somerset House during the Winter
