Undertaker's Museum

A magnificently macabre Viennese funeral museum

Category Memento Mori

It is a well-known fact that the Viennese have a fascination with death. Nowhere can one see this more clearly than at the Undertaker's Museum. On display is an economy coffin, with a flap on the bottom for re-use (the Viennese hated it and rioted), urns, coffins and photographs of corpses dressed up and seated on a chair for one last picture.

A particular delight is the “saving bell,” which, attached to the inside of a coffin, was a protection against being buried alive.
