City Museum

Less a museum than a bizarre fantasy world created by artists and engineers

I here

Housed in the former International Shoe building, the enormous 600,000 square-foot St. Louis City Museum is more adult sized playground and funhouse than it is a standard museum. Visitors are encouraged to climb on and play in the various exhibits which include old chimneys, salvaged bridges, a "Tiny Train Town," a circus themed area, enchanted caves and, perhaps the highlight in a museum overflowing with wonders, an exhibit called MonstroCity and featuring a castle turret, an adult sized ball pit and two jets suspended high above the ground.

Created by artist Bob Cassilly the museum has a higher purpose beyond being an adult jungle gym. Built by Cassilly and his team of 20 artists, the City Museum is constructed from materials reclaimed from St. Louis and continues to have a section displaying an "ever-expanding collection of architectural relics." Don't miss the ten story spiral slide that starts at the roof and takes you all the way down to the entrance to the enchanted cave.

This is truly a unique place. I have known Bob Cassily since I was a child and my father actually helped with some of the museum's construction. It is always one of the first places I recommend to visitors, as it's not only fun for kids, it lets adults have fun like they are kids again. (Oh...it also has a great bar, called Beatnik Bob's which contains a minimuseum called the The Museum of Mirth, Mystery and Mayhem...MUAH!!)
There are new delights around every corner and none of them are available anywhere else in the world. A singular experience. Go even if you don't have kids!

This is a truly amazing and wonderful place to visit. I spent the better part of a day there and still didn't see everything. You will feel like a kid again, but be warned...you will wake up the next morning extremely sore from all the activities!

My school went every year for field trips, and though I've been out of HS for 5 years, I still go back with my HS friends almost every year...quite possibly one of the best things to do in the city.

I live in St. Louis and have been to the City Museum several times. It is one of the most entertaining places I have ever gone. My kids loved it and my grandkids are now loving it. I still love it, too!
