Here's a little twist: "...the surface of the earth can be seen without distortion." Except that the whole thing appears backwards! (Inside-out, more precisely. But as with mirrors reflecting front-to-back rather than left-to-right, we perceive a different transformation.)
I have brought people with science doctorates, highly trained in symmetry operations, who were unable or unwilling to understand that the Mapparium had to be reversed to look correct from inside. Nowt so queer as folk.
