There are many ways to experience a new culture. You can try the food, read the literature, or listen to the music, just to name a few. But in this new digital series, we want you to get out of your seat and explore the world through movement and dance!
During this one-hour live experience, guests of all ages are invited to discover the roots of cultural dances from around the globe, learning some steps and uncovering the meaning behind the moves. Rather than just sitting down and watching a performance, you’re invited to get up and try out the moves yourself. After a presentation on the history and cultural significance of the dance, your host will break down a short sequence of steps to try at home or even bust out during the grand finale group performance!
This month, we’ll be joined by Yamini Kalluri, who will be introducing us to Kuchipudi, a classical Indian style dance. Named after the village it was established in, Kuchipudi dates to the 15th century and was originally only performed by men. This theatrical style of dance is known for its brisk, rhythmic patterns and vigorous movements, performed with grace. Don’t miss this incredible exploration of global movement!
