Sugarloaf Pineapple
Devour this rare variety without fear of post-pineapple mouth irritation.
If a sweet, juicy, yellow pineapple has any flaws, it’s only the inedible core and the achy feeling you get in your mouth after consuming too much of the fruit. In both cases, bromelain is the culprit. The enzyme is responsible for irritating the mouth, and the highest amounts of it are found in the pineapple’s core.
However, these issues are nonexistent in the sugarloaf pineapple, a fruit so sweet that even the core can be eaten. Its flesh is white instead of the sunny color more closely associated with fruit. The sugarloaf grows abundantly in Hawaii, but also appears in South America and West Africa.
Since the sugarloaf is considered an exotic fruit, be prepared for a hefty price tag. One pineapple costs about $25.
