Trump Sandwich

The 2016 presidential election in the United States revealed a sharply divided nation. Arguments between supporters and opponents of the new president, Donald J. Trump, raged across dinner tables and social media platforms. One result of the opposition to the new president was a symbolic deli sandwich.

The ingredient list of the Trump Sandwich is simple: white bread, bologna lunch meat, Russian-style salad dressing, and a garnish of a cornichon. Store owners in the United States (and occasionally in Canada and the United Kingdom) advertised the sandwich as “white bread, full of baloney, with Russian dressing, and a small pickle.” Each ingredient is, of course, a reference to a Trump-related issue that has made headlines. The white bread touches upon the issues of race and racism that arose during the election and remain a matter of national debate. The bologna symbolizes the “baloney” (American slang for lies or nonsense) that some believe feature prominently in President Trump’s promises and rhetoric. Meanwhile, the Russian dressing is a reference to the investigation into possible collusion between the president’s team and Russian agents during the 2016 election. Then there’s the cornichon. The small pickle is a not-so-subtle jab at the size of the president’s manhood.

As left-leaning political satire, this sandwich can be found with much higher frequency in deli establishments in college towns and politically liberal parts of the United States and abroad.
