About
This arch forms a gateway to the historic center of the village of Bocairent, in the hinterland of the Alicante region of Spain. The arch serves as a gateway to the old town and functions as an aqueduct, carrying potable water between houses across the narrow street typical of the old town.
It has a certain Moorish appearance reflecting the history of this ancient settlement, but the design is a 19th-century romantic construction. There is very little left of genuine Moorish architecture in the village.
The beehive-shaped building structure was adopted by the town and the name of the settlement was derived from that shape. The original street plan is still evident which gives the town its distinct medieval with narrow passages and blind alleys.
