About
The best San Francisco has to offer for taking kids and dogs to the ocean, hang gliding and riding horses. The little trails around the decommissioned military battery are tremendous. You can take Dutch sand ladders down to the beach, and find countless hidden trails and tunnels along the bluff.
Frederick "Fearless Freddie" Funston (September 11, 1865 – February 19, 1917) also known as Fred, was a General in the US Army, best known for his role in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War. He received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Philippine-American War.
Mark Twain, a strong opponent of U.S. imperialism, published a sarcasm-filled denunciation of Funston's mission and methods under the title "A Defense of General Funston" in the North American Review.
Fort Funston was named posthumously. General Funston today is interred at the San Francisco National Cemetery in the Presidio, where you will also find “Major” Pauline Cushman and Miss Sarah A. Bowman.
