Big Hole is the bigger brother to the nearby Hole in the Ground. It is a large maar crater in Fort Rock Basin in Oregon. The crater is approximately 6,000 feet (1,820 m) across and 300 feet (91 m) deep, but is far more eroded than the Hole in the ground crater.
Know Before You Go
From U.S. 97, go south through the town of La Pine and head east (left) on state Highway 31 about 15 miles, then right at 400 Rd. There are no signs so make sure you have the coordinates (43.425129, -121.31335) in your GPS. The drive to the rim is mostly dirt trails so a sturdy 4x4 is recommended.
