About

In the heart of Ipswich, a life-sized statue of Bobby Robson stands next to Portman Road Stadium. The statue was unveiled in 2002 in recognition of Robson's achievements with Ipswich town’s football team. Commissioned by the Ipswich Town Supporters’ Association, also funded by Ipswich Borough Council and electricity company TXU, this commemorative work shows the town’s love for the football manager.

Known as one of the greatest football managers in history, winning notable cups and leagues in Europe, Sir Robert William Robson was awarded a CBE in 1990 and knighted in 2002 for his work in football. Interestingly, his managerial career didn’t start in the U.K. but in Canada, for the Vancouver Royal Canadians. From there, he worked his way to Fulham and then to the statue’s residence in Ipswich in 1969. Lasting 13 years, Robson helped the club finish twice as League runners-up and made frequent appearances in European competitions, like winning the UEFA Cup in 1981. His work at Ipswich granted him his management for the England team, which spanned eight years. Through that time, he led the country’s team through two World Cups (1986 and 1990) and the Euro 1988.

Fortunately, England wasn’t the last of Robson’s teams to manage, going on to manage teams such as PSV Eindhoven, Sporting CP, Porto, and Barcelona. Many have noted that Robson’s talent was for developing new players, with his interpersonal skills, caring attitude, and his hard work for teams to achieve their best.

In honor of Robson's work and service to the sport, British sculptor Sean Hedges-Quinn made a life-size statue of Robson through commission. The sculptor was born in Ipswich and has worked as a model maker and a prop master. His most notable sculptural works focus on prominent figures in football, including Alf Ramsey, Ted Bates, Bob Stokoe, Nat Lofthouse, and Kevin Beattie.
