The monument to Star Trek’s Captain Kathryn Janeway was installed along the B-Line Trail, next to Wonderlab Museum in October 2020 and was unveiled on October 24th. It celebrates the fictional captain’s leadership, her connection to her future birthplace, Bloomington, Indiana, and the accomplishments of those inspired by her character.

The life-size monument consists of a bronze bust created by sculptor Aaron Eby,  mounted on a limestone base and placed upon a pedestal in the shape of a Star Trek delta symbol. On the back of the base is carved the Federation of Planets logo, and the front has a metal plaque with the Captain’s date of birth, May 20th, 2336, and a dedication to all those inspired by her.

Next to the statue is an informational table that includes information about Star Trek, Captain Janeway, and Kate Mulgrew, the actress who brought the captain to life. As well, the table tells us about Jeri Taylor, the Star Trek: Voyager executive producer who is most responsible for Captain Janeway’s creation and who choose Bloomington Indiana as her birthplace.

The Captain Janeway monument started as the dream of Mary Beth and Peter Kaczmarczyk. With the hard work of a team of dedicated volunteers, known as the Captain Janeway Collective, and the support of the city of Bloomington, it went from idea to reality in under two years, funded completely by private donations.

The Captain Janeway monument is a must-visit for all Star Trek fans.
