About
One of the historic pubs of Glasgow, the Clutha's story is one of resilience and community. Originally built in 1819, it served generations located on the ground floor of a high rise tenement that burned down in the 1960s. Some of the notable figures that have graced the stage include folk legends Woody Guthrie and the Humblebums (Gerry Rafferty and Billy Connolly) as well as Spike Milligan, Frank Zappa, and Alex Harvey.
In 2013, a police helicopter crashed into the roof of the bar, killing 10 people and injuring scores more. The community rallied behind the bar and it was rebuilt and reopened, the outdoor beer garden being roofed over (accommodating an existing tree) to create a new indoor bar space separate from where the tragic loss of life occurred in a different part of the building.
The pub is easily identified by the colorful murals on the facade and the building behind and includes indoor and outdoor seating, and specializes in live music. After the 2013 tragedy, the bar owners created a foundation that helps at-risk youth have access to the arts.
