About
The fossilized trunk of a club moss (Sigillaria) was discovered in Dawdon Colliery. Whilst modern-day club mosses stay close to the ground, during the Carboniferous period (approximately 320 million years ago) Sigillaria could grow up to 30 meters.
The surrounding area was once the site of Dawdon Colliery, one of the last mines to close in the North East in 1991. Today, the area supports diverse calcareous grassland.
