About

If you ever wander into the Jeseniky mountain range in the Czech Republic, you might be greeted with a mountain that is missing its top. Built with concrete shipped all the way from Albania to withstand the extreme temperatures and located on one of the tallest mountains in the historical region of Moravia, this power station is a destination worth a visit.

This humongous water battery was partially engineered during the Czechoslovak communist period. It was completed after the Velvet Revolution. The power station remains the pillar of the Czech electrical grid, and currently also serves as the final blackout stopgap. The power station has the ability to kickstart the coal powerplant in Chvaletice, 150 kilometers away.

However, there has also been some negative press surrounding this place. Located smack-dab in the middle of a  park, it has been the target of protests by environmental activists.

Know Before You Go

Getting all the way to the top is not going to be an easy task on your own. If it isn't winter, you can hire a bus that will drive you all the way to the parking lot next to the top of the mountain.

There is also a possibility of a guided visit through the entrails of the powerplant, but you have to reserve online beforehand. It will cost you about 300 CZK (12 EUR). The exterior of the plant is free to visit at any point in time, but the guided visits only happen Monday to Sunday from  9:00 a.m. to 3 p.m.
