About
The main building of Savitribai Phule Pune University (formerly the University of Pune) was once the residence of the governors of Bombay (now Mumbai) during the days of the British Raj. It was built in 1864 when Sir Bartle Frere was governor.
On the exterior wall of the building, above the magnificent arches, one can notice a series of circular plaques. Upon close observation, one can see that they are emblems of the erstwhile governors.
The following governors' emblems are inscribed on the wall, along with their tenure as governor: Sir George Lloyd (1918-1923), The Lord Brabourne (1933-1937), Sir Frederick Hugh Sykes (1928-1933), Sir Leslie Orme Wilson (1923-1926), Sir Roger Lumley (1937-1943), Sir John Colville (1943-1948).
