About

Eric Morecambe was part of one of the most successful comedic duos of all time: Morecambe & Wise. Born in May 1926 with the birth name of John Eric Bartholomew, he chose to use the stage name Eric Morecambe, which was the name of his hometown.

The statue, a dedication to one of the greatest comics of all time, overlooks Morecambe Bay and was unveiled by non-other than the Queen of England in July 1999. The stance portrayed by the statue is Morecambe’s characteristic “Bring Me Sunshine” pose, complete with a pair of binoculars around his neck, a nod to his love of bird-watching.

Sculpted by Graham Ibbeson, the sculpture is a little larger than Eric was in real life, and is surrounded by the Eric Morecambe stage, where some of his great catchphrases are embedded into the floor, designed by Graham Young. Bronze seagulls by artist Shona Kinloch, sit on the surrounding rocks.

A visit to the statue also provides a scenic walk down the Morecambe promenade.
