Glade Creek Grist Mill

An oxymoron of a mill that is located in Babcock State Park. The Glade Creek Grist Mill is a fully functioning, relatively young mill that is very old. How you might ask? The mill that stands at the site today was built there in 1976, but it was constructed with parts taken from three different mills that were no longer operational.

The basic structure comes from the Stony Creek Grist Mill which was located in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, and date back to the early 1880s. The wheel, which can be viewed through a tiny door under the grinding floor, was taken from the Spring Run Grist Mill in Grant County, West Virginia (age unknown). Various other parts were taken from a third mill called Roaring Creek Grist Mill, which was located somewhere around the area of Seneca Rocks.

The mill still grinds corn meal, which can be purchased in the state park gift shop. If you are lucky enough, you might be visiting on a day when the miller is in, and you can watch him grind corn meal the old-fashioned way!

In the fall, this mill becomes a mecca for photographers hoping to take that special fall foliage shot.
