His father was born in a log cabin and called from the humblest rank in life to preside over our nation during the most momentous period of its history. One generation later, Robert Todd Lincoln, the only child of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln to survive to adulthood, became Chairman of the Pullman Company, the largest manufacturing corporation at the turn of the 20th century. He built his Georgian Revival mansion in 1905 in the scenic village of Manchester. It became home to only Lincoln descendants until 1975, longer than any other Lincoln residence. It is the Great American Story.

The 1,000-pipe organ, installed in the entrance hall at Hildene in 1908 as a gift from Robert Todd Lincoln to his wife, Mary. There are 242 rolls, most of which are in good condition and through the wonder of technology, it is played each day.

FROM NEW YORK
(Approximate time: 4 hours, 200 miles)
Take Route 87 North to exit 23
Then take Route 787 North to Route 7 East (Troy, NY)
Follow NY 7 East to Route 279 East (Bennington Bypass), which bears left off Route (Note: Do not take Route 9 toward Bennington)
Follow Route 279 to the end, and follow signs to VT Route 7 North, toward Manchester.
Take exit 3 and turn left onto Route 313.
Take a right onto Historic Route 7A North.
Drive approximately 9 miles to Hildene Road and turn right.
Drive 1 mile to Hildene’s Welcome Center parking lot.

FROM BOSTON
(Approximate time: 3 1/2 hours, 180 miles)
Take Route 2 West to I-91 North.
Take exit 2 in Brattleboro and follow signs to Route 30 North
Turn left onto Route 11 & 30 and drive west to Historic Route 7A in Manchester.
Turn left and proceed south, 1 1/2 miles to Hildene Road.
Turn left onto Hildene Road and proceed 1 mile to Hildene’s Welcome Center parking lot.

FROM MONTREAL
(Approximate time: 4 hours, 200 miles)
Take New York Route 87 South to exit 20.
Follow Route 4 East to Rutland and turn right onto Route 7 South.
North of Manchester, bear right to follow Historic Route 7A into Manchester.
Continue on Route 7A to Hildene Road and turn left.
Drive 1 mile to Hildene’s Welcome Center parking lot.

FROM BENNINGTON
(Approximate time: 1/2 hour, 20 miles)
VT Route 7 North, toward Manchester.
Take exit 3 and turn left onto Route 313.
Take a right onto Historic Route 7A North.
Drive approximately 9 miles to Hildene Road and turn right.
Drive 1 mile to Hildene’s Welcome Center parking lot.

PLEASE NOTE
Googlemaps and MapQuest will will sometimes want to take you to Hildene's exit road which is not signed. The correct entrance is about one mile north of our exit road and is well signed.
