About
Joselito was a Spanish matador, considered one of the finest of all time. Joselito came from a family of bullfighters and was the youngest man ever to receive the title of matador beginning his professional career at the age of 12.
Along with Juan Belmonte, he is credited with revolutionizing the art of bullfighting during the 20th century, developing a style where the matador remains almost stationary during the bull’s charge, avoiding the animal’s horns by skillful manipulation of the cape.
This statue of Joselito is the work of the sculptor Manuel Martín Nieto, it was unveiled on June 5, 2021, to mark the centenary of the bullfighter's death. The sculpture stands 1.75 meters tall and is fashioned from bronze.
The monument depicts the famous bullfighter with a walking cape and a montera in his right hand. It stands in front of the Basílica de la Macarena, a virgin in whom Joselito professed to hold great faith.
