About

Topeka has served as the capital of Kansas since the territory became a state in 1861. Construction on the statehouse began in 1866 and wouldn't be completed until 1889.

Spanning six floors, the interior of the capitol building is one of the most beautiful capitol buildings in the midwest. A unique and memorable aspect of visiting this structure is the guided tours that take you to the very top of the copula. It's a 296 step climb up a narrow and steep stairwell to reach the very top. Along the way you'll have close up views of the inner and outer domes.

Once you get to the top of copula, you'll be rewarded with a one-of-a-kind view of the city. This is the highest point in Topeka, Kansas.

Know Before You Go

If you've never visited the statehouse, you should. It's beautiful and free to tour. If you are afraid of heights or not in good health, avoid taking the tour of the dome, although you can turn back at any time if necessary. The Kansas State Capitol website has these instructions: "Tours last approximately 40 minutes. Cost is free during scheduled times. Maximum group size is 30. Reservations are not required for groups of 10 or fewer."
