About
Just outside of Iceland Aviation Academy stands this jet fighter that belongs to the 57th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, also known as "The Black Knights of Keflavik." This squadron was stationed at Naval Air Station Keflavik and was inactivated on March 1, 1995.
The airfield was originally named Meeks Field, assumed a civilian role, and is currently Keflavik International Airport. This tandem two-seat, twin-engine long-range supersonic jet interceptor and fighter was built McDonnel Aircraft for the United States Navy.
The craft was once the most-produced American supersonic aircraft in history. It was widely used in the Vietnam War and also played a major role in the Cold War.
