Mount Trashmore
Scenic mount trashmore, Virginia Beach's most curious waterfront still has a couple of secrets.
Virginia Beach’s Mount Trashmore is at times a skate park, kid-friendly respite, and fishing hole, but it’s always a dump.
Created by compacting layers of refuse with clean soil. Covering roughly 165-acres, the Mount Trashmore Park includes two lakes, two mountains, and a multitude of trails. The park looks from the outside to have never been a dump at all, but looks can be deceiving.
If one were to dig beneath the surface they would find that the whole hill is covered in a thick layer of rubber to keep water from running through the trash. In addition, three of the flag poles in the park secretly act as vents for methane gas released by the rotting trash beneath the scenic park. Apparently lightning struck one once and the gases being released caught flame.
Know Before You Go
The park is easily accessed from Independence Blvd. just south of I-264 and is well-marked.
