About

Finished in October of 1892, the Old Liberty County Jail replaced the original one-story Storywood Jail. The original jail site and date of construction are unknown. The plan for the new jail included a split floor plan with a wall down the middle, splitting the jail between men and women.

In 1940-1941, there were a number of modifications and alterations done to the building, including a new roof and updated iron-clad cells.

The jail was closed by Governor Lester Maddox and was eventually auctioned off to the Liberty County Housing Authority. After that, the building was donated to the city of Hinesville, where they have been holding exhibits for local artists.

The museum/art exhibit is open every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm. Entry is free and parking is available beside the building.
