About
65 Million years ago a forest was destroyed by volcanic eruptions. Preserved as fossils today, the Petrified Forest of José de Ormachea near Sarmiento is now a natural reserve showcasing the ancient trees.
Although very rare, other petrified forests can be found in the United States in California, and Arizona, elsewhere in Argentina, and on the island of Lesbos, Greece.
