About

Trekking routes abound In Chapada Diamantina, Brazil’s vast national park known for its sweeping views and dramatic plateaus. Many visitors plan days-long hikes to visit remote peaks and hidden valleys. But it’s also an excellent spot for just lazing around. Case in point: Riberão do Meio, a series of swimming holes with its own natural waterslide near the town of Lençóis.

The pools have been naturally formed by the river (of the same name) that feeds them, creating a peaceful place to relax after long days of hiking or travel. Leading into one of the pools is a natural rock slide, often running with water, which brave visitors can slide down if the current is strong enough.

Accessing this slide requires hiking to the swimming holes, and then carefully climbing up the rock face, as it can be slippery. Make sure to get a ride from someone who knows the area, or get directions if you’re driving yourself. It’s a short drive from Lençóis, and a moderate hike from the trailhead. But you’ll be rewarded with cool waters, and few (if any) other bathers.
