About

The metro station was named after the city gate located in the area until 1858 when they were destroyed to free up land for urban development.

Some relics of this gate, such as the remnants of the old structures of the city walls can still be found in the metro station. There are other remains located around the city, but these inside a metro station are most interesting because they survived as a modern feature of the city.

Outside there are glass panels set into the floor, although now badly scratched, if visitors peer through them closely there are artifacts on display at the base of the wall. At street level, there is a sculpture laid out showing the course of the city walls. Some argue that Vienna's city walls were actually built during the Third Crusade.
