About

As you walk up to the memorial in the Kanawha Rifelemens Memorial Park, you'll notice a white grave sticking out from the right side. The graveyard is not attached to the memorial and appears to be completely random. However, the graveyard belongs to Captain Thomas Bullitt, the very first person to own land in the city of Charleston. Bullitt was also a soldier who fought in the French and Indian War.

Bullitt was granted land in West Virginia following a successful expedition surveying Kentucky, where he eventually founded Louisville. Bullitt would later play a pivotal role in the American Revolution and served several terms in the Virginia House of Delegates.
