A taste of Egypt on the outskirts of Geelong.

The Sphinx Hotel is located in the port city of Geelong, the second largest Victorian city. The location has no relation whatsoever to Egypt, so therefore this hotel sits very randomly on the outskirts of town. It’s situated on one of the major trunk roads that lead out of the city, and from the road, this very distinctive Egyptian-themed complex suddenly stands out.

It is comprised of a nearly 50 foot high Sphinx, as well as a pyramid and multiple statues of Egyptian pharaohs. They surprisingly resemble sandstone from afar, but when visitors get up close they will be able to notice their hollow interiors. The Egyptian theme was created in 1998.

Inside the complex, is a three-star hotel, as well as the popular Pharaoh’s Bistro that serves drinks and meals. The hotel is well worth a visit at least for the photo opportunity.

Know Before You Go

There is a large free car park at the complex. If visiting, consider going in for a meal or drink, and you could even consider staying for the night. The only issue is that the hotel isn’t that central, but there are adequate taxi facilities available.
