About
Built between 1883 and 1886, the Towers played a key role in the social life of Rhode Islanders in the late 1800s. It was part of the great Narragansett Pier Casino, which was considered one of the United Statesโs most prestigious resorts.
Back then, the casino was not only a place for gambling, but also a sport center where visitors enjoyed tennis, billiards, bowling, cards, and other entertainment such as restaurants and boating. It was certainly a social and class landmark in New England.
Unfortunately, it all came to an end on September 12, 1900, when the Rockingham Hotel, adjacent to the casino, caught fire. The resulting inferno spread, burning down the casino. Only the walls of the Towers survived.
Today, the Towers, added to the National Register of Historic Places, stand as a remnant of the lost Narragansett Pier Casino. They remain, defiant of time and symbol of the Gilded Age.
