Nutty Narrows Bridge

Bridge Provides Safe Passage for Squirrels

Category Microminiature art, Inspired Inventions, Odd Accommodations, Architectural Oddities, Follies and Grottoes

The Nutty Narrows Bridge was constructed in 1963 by a local builder, the late Amos Peters, to give squirrels a way to cross Olympia Way, a busy Longview, Washington thoroughfare, without getting flattened by passing cars.

Before the bridge's construction, squirrels had to dodge traffic to get to and from the Park Plaza office building, where office staff often left out a nutty feast for the squirrels. Many times, Peters and others who worked in and near Park Plaza witnessed squirrels being run over. During a lunch break one day, the safety of these squirrels was discussed and the bridge seemed the best solution. With City Council approval, Peters and a group of associates installed the Nutty Narrows Bridge. Squirrels were soon using the overpass to cross the road safely.

Witnesses have reported seeing young squirrels being taught by their parents how to use the bridge.

I bet even the traffic accidents lessened due to the less cars swerving to miss these rodents. How to Get Rid of Squirrels

I am from Longview and, yes, it is VERY true, squirrels use it all the time. I used to watch them from the window of my orthodontist's office. Dr. Dave was in the Park Plaza building for a time. It's a landmark!

I love that bridge, every time I drive under it I have to look to see if there are any squirrels scurrying across, it's fun.

What a sweet idea! I always feel saddened when I see some poor animal on the side of the road. Here's to considering the other creatures that share our planet :-)

I grew up in Longview and LOVE the Nutty Narrows. Squirrels really do use it and the bridge gets decorated every Christmas. It is one of those weird wonders that makes Longview great.
