Like an elegant antiques mall gone horribly wrong, 24 different vendors sell their weird and eclectic wares in eyecatching booth displays lined up along aisles at Austin's premier curiosities shop.

Uncommon Objects opened in 1991 and is located along Old South Congress Avenue (or SoCo). The owner, Steve Weiman, is a collector and assemblage artist who honed his eye for Texas style kistch and memorabila during a stint as prop-finder for the Chili's restaurant chain.

The shop carries every imaginable type of random find: from cases of costume jewelry to wall-mounted antlers, rustic furniture to boxes of old photographs, old signs, pinball machines, and recently, a taxdermied terrier that looked just like Toto.

SoCO is a great little artsy area with a bunch of funky shops and eateries. There's also the SoCo Trailer Park (food trailers) across the street from Uncommon Objects. I had an awesome rattlesnake and rabbit sausage(!) sandwich there. There's even a cupcake trailer.
