The Atlas Obscura VR App Is Back
First stop, a mystical chamber hidden beneath the Italian countryside.
Editor’s Note, December 2024: Originally released in 2017 for Oculus Go and Samsung Gear VR, the Atlas Obscura VR app—developed in partnership with New Canvas—has been remastered for modern devices.
Atlas Obscura is thrilled to announce the return of it’s virtual reality experience!
With our partners at New Canvas (formerly Start VR), we set out in 2017 to create a VR experience that was all about choosing your own path, and not knowing what’s around the next corner. Atlas Obscura’s mission has always been focused on the delight of discovery, and Atlas Obscura VR captured that feeling perfectly.
When we first produced the app we worked to capture everything at the highest possible fidelity, knowing that the technology would evolve. With a recent remastering of the videos and sections of the app updated to work with current room scale VR technology, the experience is the best its ever been.
Currently $12.99, the Atlas Obscura VR app brings viewers to the Temples of Humankind, a huge series of psychedelic underground temples hidden in the foothills of the Alps; Salina Turda, a futuristic world underneath Transylvania; and a classic American roadside attraction, the Winchester Mystery House. Using your headset, you can experience these far-flung places in incredible detail and guide your own interactive path in discovering them.
In addition to these first three episodes, the app features over 50 awe-inspiring places whose stories are told via a combination of photos and audio. To experience the magic of the world’s hidden wonders get the Atlas Obscura VR app here.
This story originally ran in 2017; it has been updated for 2024.
