The legacy of Black people in the United States is filled with extreme hardship and hard-won triumph. Conquering unimaginable odds has fostered a spirit of perseverance and community that spans generations.
That unrelenting drive to achieve equality would not have been possible without a few trailblazers—many of whom were women. Black women were pioneers in the fight for freedom, from creating learning institutions for Black children when opportunities were scarce, to playing a direct role in helping enslaved populations find salvation in freedom, to changing the culture through their actions and talents.
