About
Cabbage Key is a secluded island in the Pine Island Sound off the coast of Florida that is accessible only by boat. It's home to an inn, restaurant, gopher turtles, and cormorants, and one of the most resilient water towers in all of Florida.
The tower was one among many built upon islands in the surrounding area, but it is the only original water tower in the region that is still standing. The water tower did sustain heavy damage during Hurricane Charley in 2004, but repairs to the tower prevented any loss of form or function.
Originally built in the 1930s, the tower stands 60 feet high and holds over 6,000 gallons of water. Countless visitors have climbed the 41 steps leading to the observation deck to take in the amazing views of the island and the surrounding waters of Pine Island Sound.
