About

Those travelling through the Kentish countryside, approaching its eastern coast, may lay eyes on a rather tasty-sounding sign. At the intersection of West Street and Northbourne Road in Finglesham, is a delectable directional, leading travellers not only to the coast at Dover and Deal but also to the appetising pairing of Ham and Sandwich, styled one name above the other like two slices of bread. The town of Sandwich gained its name during England's Anglo-Saxon period, ‘Sondwic’ meaning ‘market town on sandy soil’, while Ham’s name dates from this same period, simply meaning home, or homestead.
