About

The heritage main building of Savitribai Phule Pune University (formerly the University of Pune) was constructed between 1864 and 1871. During that time, it served as the monsoon residence of the British Governor of Bombay (now Mumbai).

For the construction of the grand building, stone was quarried from a spot nearby. It has now blossomed into a lake with a self-sustaining ecosystem of its own.

The stone quarry lake is home to rare species of plants, birds, insects, and various water-based elements. Recently, there have been plans to turn it into a state-of-the-art ecology park and conduct educational drives for school children.

The stone quarry lake has an imposing, rustic, old tower in the middle. Around the sloping walls of the quarry, one can also see some old quarry machinery. The lake is abuzz with all kinds of interesting flora and fauna.
