About
In the middle of a residential neighborhood in Pune stands an ancient temple with a huge tree growing all around the structure. The tree has beautifully encapsulated the entire structure and is now a part of the temple.
This temple is called Zakoba Temple, with the name “Zakoba” referring to the temple’s deity. An equestrian idol of the deity is enshrined within the “Gabhara” (the sacred inner chamber of the temple). The entrance of the temple has two stone pillars. On either side of the entrance, there are two “Virgals” (Victory Stones/Hero Stones) depicting warriors. Within and around the temple there are idols and photos of other deities also.
The temple is painted in shades of yellow and red. The peepal tree (Ficus religiosa) surrounding the structure is most fascinating. The tree has made its way along the temple’s ancient stonework over the centuries and it now hugs the temple affectionately. It is beautiful to admire nature’s artwork in the way the tree’s branches and roots weave themselves through the stonework, creating a stunning display of the union of natural elements.
According to sources, some people believe this temple to be around 200-300 years old, considering its style of architecture and fascinating intricacies.
