Moissanite is a naturally occurring gemstone discovered in the 1800s by a French chemist named Henri Moissan. In reality, it was discovered among meteorite debris. Moissan assumed the gemstone was a diamond since it resembled diamonds in appearance. Moissan discovered in the 1900s that this was a completely distinct gemstone made of carbon and silicon.
