The Murals of Maxo Vanka
Explore the Symbols. Decode their Story.
Nestled in the hills of Millvale,
Covering the century old walls of St. Nicholas church,
are a series of timeless works by Croatian immigrant Maxo Vanka.
Painted in 1937 and 1941, in the midst of the Great Depression and WWII, the murals offer a lens, like none other, into the industrial and cultural history of Millvale, Pittsburgh, and America as a whole.
