Video Wonder: Foot Fights at the World Toe Wrestling Championship
Locking lips is intimate. Then there’s locking toes.
Toe wrestling came about in 1976, apparently in an effort to invent a game that only the British could win. Now, as this video shows, there’s an annual World Toe Wrestling Championship in Derbyshire, England. More like arm wrestling than thumb wrestling, each round involves three bouts that alternate feet, carefully regulated by a referee.
To check for any unfairly advantaged toes, or, one would imagine, foot fungus, a nurse inspects each contestant’s toes before he or she can compete. Competition takes place outside or in a local pub, in proper British fashion.
Recent champs include Alan “Nasty” Nash and Tracy Tippy Toe. Start training and you could be next.
